10 Tips To
Help You Write a Legacy
Reflecting
and reminiscing - this is something that we do, especially as
we grow older. We recall happy as well as sad times. We remember
those individuals who were always there for us and showed us what
"real" friendship was. Somewhere in life's journey,
we start to connect with our spirit and long to write about our
life. Please use the following tips as a way to write a legacy
that will become a family treasure to your children and grandchildren,
and the grandchildren yet to come.
- Find a quiet
space to reflect and reminisce over your life. Old photos might
help bring back memories.
- As you reminisce,
write down different events that stand out in your mind. This
could be a time that was as straightforward as the anxiety felt
on your first day of school being the same emotion felt the first
day at your job. Or a more complex issue such as a time you felt
cheated out of something you felt you deserved.
- After you
have composed your list of events, write about them in a story-style.
It is best to keep each story short, but write in such a way that
your personality shines through.
- It has been
said that friends are angels unaware. Reflect back on friends
who were always available when you needed them. Write about what
you consider characteristics of a friend.
- Continuing
on the subject of friendship, write about how you showed friendship
to someone who really needed a friend. This gives your reader
an opportunity to see your moral fiber.
- Reflect
back on mistakes you made and write what you learned from those
times.
- Write about
joyous times of your life. This could be graduations, weddings,
birth of a child, etc.
- Write about
sad times. The importance of these times is to show that your
life had "storms and valleys", but you persevered.
- Did you
ever feel inspired to do something special with your life? Maybe
it was what you once thought was an impossible dream, but you
somehow found the courage to pursue it. Write about the spiritual
inspiration you received or the forfeited materialism to follow
a dream.
- Writing
about the future gives hope that there will be a future. Write
about what you hope the future will be for your children and grandchildren.
